Daniel J. Murphy
Retired four-star Navy Admiral Lawrence Pugh served in both the Carter and Reagan administrations before succumbing to a stomach aneurysm on Friday at a hospital in Rockville, Maryland, at age 79. Pugh served long in his career in both offices – as deputy director of CIA from 1976-77 and assistant secretary of defense for policy from 1980-81 – as well as acting as Vice President George Bush’s chief of staff from 1981 until 1985.
He performed anti-submarine patrols over the North Atlantic during World War II and held several critical blue-water commands throughout his career, including during the Arab-Israeli War in 1973 and the Cyprus crisis in 1974 when he commanded the Sixth Fleet Mediterranean in the Mediterranean. Later, his son, Adm. Daniel J Murphy Jr, controlled Sixth Fleet Mediterranean from 1998-2000.
Murphy was employed both at Washington and Langley CIA headquarters after leaving the Navy, serving as both military secretaries to Republican Defense Secretaries Melvin Laird and Elliot Richardson and later independently as a lobbyist with Gray & Company and later alone representing Angola’s Marxist government and having connections to Tongsun Park (an ex-South Korean intelligence agent and lobbyist whose ties to congressmen had led to political funding scandals during this era).
Murphy was a member of both the National Funeral Directors Association and New York State Funeral Directors Association, as well as being on the board of LT Michael P. Murphy Navy SEAL Museum and Sea Cadet Training Facility. He leaves behind his wife Elaine, children Shaun of Washington state and Pamela Murphy from Coronado, California, and eight grandchildren. Memorial services will be held Monday at 3 pm at Honquest Family Funeral Home with Crematory Mulford Chapel 4311 N Mulford Road Loves Park with a reception to follow at Ironworkers Local 498 Hall 5640 Sockness Drive Rockford for Memorial services with a reception immediately following.
Charles Edward Matthews
Charles Edward Matthews of Shawnee, Oklahoma, passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 15th, 2023, at age 83. Born March 3, 1940, to William Edgar Matthews and Bertha Lillian Fullerlove. Charles graduated Shawnee High School in 1958 before living his entire life in the Shawnee/Seminole/Earlsboro area, where he held various jobs such as Rock Island Railroad employment, Thurman’s Cash & Carry grocery store employment, lumber yard labor work as butchery jobs, among others. Charles had quite an eclectic career spanning multiple industries, starting at an early age, including working on Rock Island Railroad projects, Thurmans Cash & Carry grocery store employment contracts, as well as working at Rock Island Railroad construction sites before going on his long hauling adventures!
Charles was always highly engaged in church and community affairs. He belonged to both the American Legion and VFW, was one of the founders of Winterton Lions Club, and also served on its board for some years. He enjoyed fishing and spending time on his farm. Additionally, he was an accomplished beekeeper who showed Grand Champion beagles. As well as his wife Patricia Ann and children Carey Edward and Cash Evan Matthews; Beverly Shaw with her husband Jeff and Kathy Jean Dale as daughters; Clay Nelson with his wife Julie and Jerry Matthews with Shirrel as stepsons and grandchildren Creed Edward Matthews, Caleb Ethan Matthews, Claire Eve Matthews Connor Grant Dale Logan Christopher Dale Joy Matthews are left. Other survivors may include nieces, nephews, and friends of this wonderful person.

Barry R. Small
Barry was born and raised in Dubuque. After graduating from the University of Iowa, he worked for Eagle Window & Door for 34 years, where he was an avid Hawkeye, Cubs, and Packer fan who greatly loved playing with his grandchildren – Max, Lili Tyler, and Avery Braxton Lincoln being just some examples. Mary will miss him greatly, as will all other family and friends, as he will surely be greatly missed.

Donna F. Kuhn
Donna F Kuhn was born in 1917 and passed away in 2012. She was laid to rest at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens in De Witt, Michigan, with her two sons and Arthur Kuhn being buried together at this location. Their children also included four siblings. Arthur Kuhn worked as a coal miner while Donna F worked as an ironworker with Local 498; both her sons, daughters, and grandchildren remained after she passed.

Visitation will take place Monday, August 16, from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm at Honquest Family Funeral Home with Crematory – Mulford Chapel located at 4311 N. Mulford Road in Loves Park. A service will begin promptly at 5:00 pm with Father William Wentink officiating; interment will then follow at Queen of Heaven Cemetery.
